In keeping with its motto, “We serve, so none shall go hungry,” the Herkimer County Hunger Coalition recently presented a check for $500 to the First Presbyterian Church of Ilion Lunch-Dinner Program.

Volunteer George Gullis indicated that the eight-volunteer “lunchbunch” provides hearty bagged lunches every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 AM-12 PM at the church on 90 Morgan Street.

An average of 65 families cobble down 130-150 sandwiches and trimmings. The dinner crowd averaging 80-85 people receives home-cooked dinners every second and fourth Thursday from 5:30 PM til 6:30 PM. A dozen or so volunteers serve the meals, and dining is outdoors, weather permitting.

The clientele ranges in age from young children to a 93 year- old regular from the Masonic Home in Utica. And some meals are delivered by four drivers on their own gas money. Gullis indicated donations are welcomed (First Presbyterian Chirch-90 Morgan St.-Ilion, N.Y. 13365-food program in the lower left).

He also offered that Franco’s Pizza at the Mini Mall in Ilion provides free pizza and drink slices to resident children and accepts donations.

Lenarcic stated-“Kay and I were amazed at the quality of the food provided and joyous socializing among the very young and elderly which abounded. Kudos to George and the volunteers for doing a great service for the community and the good Lord above. The Coalition is pleased to have been able to help out.”
